i have a 2009 YZ 450F, i take VERY good care of it. yes i race it and am pretty demanding on it but i take care of it, change the oil more suggested etc.. i put the bike in the gargae for the winter. (heated) and now its plus 3 out side so i took it for a rip, i let it warm up for about 2 or three minutes then left, i later got stuck in the snow enough to make me get off the bike and when i did i noticed that black oil was leaking from behind the drive sprocket? what could this be? a seal? but when i check my motor oil its mint, nice and clear, im not sure what this could be.??? please help, cost of a mechanic is unreal here.
It's the countershaft seal. This is a very easy fix. Take off the chain guard and drive sprocket. You will see the seal, if it is clean then it is the source of your leak (wet oil will keep the area free of dirt and stuff). The seal is easy to remove with a seal puller, or very carefully with a screwdriver. Grease inner lip of new seal. Use a medium/small drift and tap the new seal around the edge until it's flush with case. The seal should be cheap from a shop.
